Did you know that an employee leaving your current employee benefits plan has 31 days (some insurance companies allow for up to 60 days) to convert that coverage into life insurance and/or individual or family health insurance – without medical underwriting? The Supreme Court has decided that the onus is on you – the employer – to make sure that the terminated employee is aware of this?
Did you also know that the Ontario Court of Appeal recently determined that you can’t assume that your terminated employees will have LTD coverage at their new job, and that you could still be responsible for their LTD coverage – even after they leave your company.
